The American actor Richard Lewis, recognized for sharing the lead role with Larry David in the series Curb Your Enthusiasm, died at the age of 76 at his home in Los Angeles due to a heart attack, confirmed to Hollywood media from the HBO network, which broadcast the program.

The comedian had left the program in 2021 to recover from three heart surgeries, and last April, he said that doctors had diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease. However, the actor had reappeared in a surprising way in some episode.

Lewis had an extensive career that began on the small screen in 1979 and had achieved popularity in the 80s through various appearances on The Tonight Show and Late Show with David Letterman, with monologues in which he developed a funny dark and neurotic character, very similar to to the renowned type of humor practiced by his partner Larry David.

In addition to his humorous specials, on television he also gained great recognition when he shared the bill since 1989 with Jamie Lee Curtis in the romantic comedy series Anything but Love, which aired on the ABC network.

“Richard Lewis helped people laugh and heal through his tireless and tireless belief in sobriety. The laughter may stop, but the healing never. It is the power of recovery, fellowship and solidarity and it is available in all parts at the same time. A call away. Rest knowing that you helped people, Richard. First of all, me,” the artist wrote in her last publication.

In cinema he could be seen in dramatic films such as Goodbye to Las Vegas, starring NIcholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue; and Drunks, where he played an alcoholic; and in comedies such as The Crazy, Crazy Adventures of Robin Wood, by Mel Brooks.

Lewis considered himself a survivor after years of battling his addiction to alcoholism, cocaine and methamphetamine, and depression and anxiety. Likewise, he claimed that he had begun a recovery process after the death of his colleague John Candy in 1994.

He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me cry and I will never forgive him for that.”

For its part, the television network also mourned the death of the actor. “We are heartbroken to learn that Richard Lewis has passed away. His comedic brilliance, wit and talent were unmatched.”
