“Renovation of Léonard Tunnel: Updates, Project Details, and Timeline”

2023-04-19 04:58:00

After carrying out preparatory work between January and May 2022, a second phase of the renovation of the tunnel began on Tuesday. In order to minimize disruption, work will take place mainly in the evening, at night and on weekends. The Léonard tunnel passes under the Léonard crossroads, which connects the E411 and the Brussels Ring (R0) at Tervuren.

It has four tubes: one for each direction of traffic on each highway. Since its construction in the 1960s and 1970s, the infrastructure has suffered greatly: the concrete has been affected by de-icing salts, exhaust gases and groundwater infiltration.

Today, the whole tunnel needs a complete overhaul. The renovation, whose budget is around 28 million euros, consists first of all of repairing or replacing the walls and ceilings of the tunnel. The roof slab of the Brussels Ring tunnel will receive a special treatment during which the reinforcing steel of the concrete will be treated in order to prevent it from further rusting. Safety in the tunnels will be improved, with new lighting, cameras, loudspeakers and new ventilation.

Finally, the road surface will also be reviewed. From April 18 to spring 2024, the work will take place in the Brussels Ring tunnel, followed by that of the E411. It will normally be completed in early 2025. During the works, the tunnels being repaired will be completely closed at night and a surface diversion will be put in place. During the day, however, both tunnels will be open to traffic. (Belga)
