At the beginning of his speech, Biden congratulated the new Republican Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy, and said that he was “looking forward to working with him.” This is the first time that Biden has delivered the union speech before a House controlled by the Republican Party.

Biden also congratulated Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries as the first black minority leader in the House of Representatives, as well as Senator Mitch McConnell for being the longest-serving leader in the Senate.

Biden thanked former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which was met with cheers from the Democrats, and Biden said: “I want to offer special appreciation to someone who I think will be considered the greatest president in the history of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.”
