A man who became stranded in a snowmobile while traveling between two Alaskan towns Thursday morning was able to be rescued by authorities thanks to a feature on his iPhone 14 that works with satellite technology.
The phone did not have cell service, but the man, who was traveling between the towns of Noorvik to Kotzebue, separated by almost 70 kilometers, activated his iPhone Emergency SOS through the satellite function, which alerted local authorities, reported CBS News.
Local volunteer search and rescue personnel responded to the man’s location using GPS coordinates provided by the Apple Emergency Response Center, the Alaska Department of Public Safety reported.
The search team located the man and transported him to the town of Kotzebue. The subject was uninjured.
Another new iPhone 14 feature that has hit the headlines allows first responders to be alerted if the phone detects a serious car accident.
In October, a passenger’s iPhone alerted first responders when a car crashed into a tree in Lincoln, Nebraska. Six people died in the accident.
