The 63,972 mothers will get a retroactive increase for the €2,000 maternity allowance they received in 2023, while the remaining 10,000 mothers will be paid the retroactive increase in allowance for the first installment they received after the birth of their child.

With the increase in the birth allowance voted by the government, the basic amount of 2,000 euros that was for each birth is adjusted according to the number of children as follows:

* For the 1st child 2,400 euros (increase of 400 euros).

* For the 2nd child 2,700 euros (increase of 700 euros).

* For the 3rd child 3,000 euros (increase of 1,000 euros).

* From the 4th child and above 3,500 (increase of 1,500 euros).

For twins, the amount of 2,400 euros will be paid twice.

The allowance increase applies retroactively to all new births in 2023.

According to OPECA data, which will also make the payments, in 2023 63,972 mothers had a child, of which 54,807 gave birth to a first and second child and will receive an additional allowance of 400 euros and 700 euros respectively, while 9,165 had a third and fourth child and will receive an allowance supplement of 1,000 euros and 1,500 euros respectively.

For 2024, beneficiaries so far are around 10,000 new mothers. which will receive the new increased allowance in two installments. The 1st installment is granted the month following the child’s birth, if the application is submitted and approved within the month of the child’s birth. The 2nd installment is paid after 5 months from the month of the child’s birth.

For example:

*Families who had their first child in 2023 and already received the 2,000 euros will receive a one-off increase of 400 euros on April 30.

*A family that had a second child in 2023 and received the 2,000 euros, while in 2020 they had the first child, will be subsidized with another 700 euros for the birth of the second child, with payment of the increase on April 30.

*A woman with a twin pregnancy who gave birth to 2 children in December 2023 and has not yet been paid the first installment of the allowance of 2,000 euros for each child (i.e. 1,000+1,000 euros) will be paid the first installment in double along with the increase, i.e. get 1,400 euros + 1,400 euros and a total of 2,800 euros for the two children on April 30. As soon as 5 months have passed since the birth, he will receive the second installment for the two children with another 2,800 euros.

*A family that had 2 children from 2019 to 2020 and is going to have a 3rd child in 2024 will get the birth allowance for the third child of 3,000 euros.

*A family with 3 children who had the 4th child in 2023 will get a retroactive increase of 1,500 euros from the birth allowance.

The birth allowance is paid to the mother who resides permanently and legally in Greece and has an annual equivalent family income of up to 40,000 euros (note: up to 80,000 euros total family income).

Guaranteed monthly salaries from €1,096

The increased birth allowance is combined with the maternity protection allowance, which was extended to self-employed mothers, farm women and wage earners who until now were not provided for (e.g. Press Funds) who had a child from 24 September 2023 onwards .

The first payments of the increased maternity allowance to the new beneficiaries are expected to be made at the end of May, as within the next few days the submission of applications to DYPA will begin.

A mother who had a child within 2024 can benefit twice, since if she decides to refrain from work or does not owe EFKA contributions, she will receive on the one hand the 2,400 euros from the one-off maternity allowance and on the other hand the maternity allowance of 830 euros for 9 months. The total benefit from the two benefits amounts to 9,870 euros for the whole 9 months or 1,096 euros per month. If she had a second child, then the benefit from the two benefits for 9 months reaches 10,170 euros or 1,130 euros per month.
