REVIEW: The 1975 took fans home

According to singer Matty Healy, their name was inspired by doodles he found on the back of Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. With the release of their first album in 2013, it was evident that a remarkable band was born.

It has gone through periods of being seen by older listeners and critics as just another copycat of 90s Britpop formations, but at the same time has become one that girls love, which is usually a sign of generational acceptance. She supports the lesbian, gay, transsexual and bisexual community and doesn’t care how people live.

A demonstration of her social attitudes was last year’s kiss between Healy and bassist Ross MacDonald at a festival in Malaysia. It was supposed to support the minorities there, but instead it brought an early end to the event, a protracted tussle with the organizers to compensate for the economic losses and concerns of those involved that the minorities in the country will be persecuted more. Healy also fondly kissed fans, still doing so in 2022, and verbally expressed support for minorities several times.

This band just knows how to attract attention, or rather make people react. A few years ago, Healy ate raw meat during a performance at New York’s Madison Square Garden. But last year he promised that he let everything go through his head and that he would calm down.

Perhaps that is why this son of British actors Denise Welch and Tim Healy seemed calm in Prague.

Although he sometimes smoked on stage and maybe poured some alcohol into himself, he otherwise did nothing that would be outrageous in our latitudes.

A view of The 1975 on stage

At the same time, there was a lot to look at. The 1975 built the stage as an apartment. The scene consisted of staircases, living rooms and sofas lit by dim yellow lamps. Four band members plus four accompanying musicians stood in the rooms.

The order in the apartment was, let’s say, rocker. Healy would occasionally sing seated in his chair, and his bandmates would sometimes join him. As he went into the final set, he disappeared into the screen of one of the many televisions after his acoustic performance. The singing part was left to the guest Polly Money, who sang the song Jesus Christ 2005 God Bless America.

The audience was obviously having a good time. In addition, the vast majority of them knew the lyrics of the songs so well that they sang them from beginning to end with the band.

The 1975 brought all the audience in the hall to their feet.

The 1975 served pop in its current version, underpinned by an appropriate dose of rock bravado and not disguising that the nineties island formations were their inspiration. The mood they set in the hall was one of joy no matter what Healy was singing about.

However, from about halfway through, the concert was somewhat stereotypical, as the atmosphere did not change. It was colored only by the mentioned acoustic block and the dry song by fallingforyou.

The fact that there were eight skilled musicians on stage was reflected in the compact sound. In it, Healy sang with ease and solidity, although he is not the type of singer whose voice is exceptional.

The 1975 in Prague took the visitors to their home. They offered them an unforgettable party built with meaningful songs, opened their hearts and behaved kindly. They have shown that they have the confidence that made them go down in music history before and they are able to defend that post. Like a band of its generation.
