Drive 1,200 kilometers on a single battery charge for an electric vehicle, according to Toyota it’s possible. The manufacturer claims to have designed a so-called solid-solid electrolyte battery which would make it possible to achieve this autonomy. Its charge would be very fast, to the point that in less than 10 minutes the brand claims that the battery could go from 10 to 80% capacity. This battery technology, called “solid state” or even semi-conductor, replaces liquid electrolytes with their equivalent in “solid” materials.
Until now, many experiments around these batteries revolved around improving their longevity. Because if they are as efficient as traditional models, safer and even twice as dense and light, they still pose major stability concerns. The movement of lithiumlithium ions during charging causes them to expand, then they reduce in size and this quickly alters the overall chemistry of the battery. This limited number of cycles was their only big flaw, in addition to a high production cost.
Size, weight, costs, halved
However, research laboratories have found alloysalloys to regulate this phenomenon but, in all cases, the cost of mass production of the technology remained problematic. Moreover, at first, the brand had decided to limit this type of technology to its hybrid cars only. However, with this announcement, Toyota seems to have both definitively solved this problem of stability and production cost.
The manufacturer intends to generalize this type of battery on its electric range. This does not mean that we will quickly see Toyota vehicles equipped with these batteries. Mass production of these should take place at best by 2027 or 2028. Still according to Toyota, these batteries should cost half as much, while being half the weight and half the size of current models. .
