Riga introduces new rules for electric scooters

The first speed and parking restrictions for electric scooters in Riga are planned to be introduced in May.

This way, companies renting out electric scooters will have enough time to prepare for the introduction of restrictions, and local governments will have time to designate zones where parking will be allowed.

The first zone will be located in the Old Town from May. It has a speed limit of 20 kilometers per hour. In addition, micromobility devices will no longer be left anywhere, but only parked in specially designated areas.

From June, the zone will be expanded to Elizabetes Street, and over time, if necessary, further.

According to the new rules, the municipality will publish information regarding speed limit zones and parking bans for public vehicles in the “Communication and Mobility” section of the municipal data portal “Geo Rīga”.

Sharing services will only be permitted in vehicles that are equipped with a system that regulates speed and parking in accordance with the speed limit zones and no parking zones indicated on the map.

The vehicle sharing service provider will be required to ensure the movement of vehicles parked in a parking prohibited zone no later than three hours following the entry into force of the administrative act.

Before making the decision, the Latvian Mobility Association urged MPs not to adopt the rules, pointing out a number of shortcomings.
