Recent government statistics revealed that Tunisia recorded 22,201 new cases of cancer during the past year, an average of 60 cases per day, which places additional pressure on health institutions that are finding it difficult to contain these increasing numbers of patients.

According to figures from the governmental Saleh Aziz Institute, which specializes in treating cancerous diseases, lung cancer for men and breast cancer for women are the most common tumors.

In this context, Ahmed Bakkar, a physician specializing in radiotherapy, said that the numbers are rising every year, as infections did not exceed 20,000 in 2022. He expects the coming years to be more difficult, noting that cancer is the number one cause of death in Tunisia.

In a statement to Al Arabiya.net, Bakkar attributes the increase in the number of people infected with cancer to the presence of a climate that encourages the emergence and spread of infections, which are smoking, the use of alcohol and tobacco products, and the rise in diabetes, as well as wrong eating habits that cause obesity, which are among the main causes of this disease. The malicious.

He pointed out that the absence of a culture of early detection and diagnosis of diseases, despite the awareness campaigns carried out by the state and the national programs it launches to combat this disease, which is considered the greatest factor that helps in avoiding cancer diseases, in addition to the inability to find appropriate treatment for several cancer diseases.

He concluded that all of these factors combined contributed to the increase in cancer patients, in addition to the lack of available treatment capabilities and the unavailability of medications, especially within government hospitals.

In October of each year, the health authorities in Tunisia launch widespread awareness campaigns to urge Tunisians on the importance of self-examination and medical examination for early detection of cancer, and send medical personnel to cities and rural areas to carry out examinations and investigations of tumors.
