In Belarus, more than 50 cases of viral hepatitis A (HAV) were registered in the period from January to July 2023. This is 2 times more than in the same period of 2022. In the age structure of patients with HAV, the adult population predominated – more than 85%. Such data lead at the Republican Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health.

The department clarified that in 25% of cases, infection occurred as a result of the consumption of infected food and dishes prepared from them. The contact-household route was recorded in 16% of cases when hygiene rules were not observed through dirty hands and household items. Water infection was noted when drinking water of non-guaranteed quality (columns, wells), as well as when swallowing water while swimming in polluted open water bodies. In 9% of cases, patients contracted HAV while in other countries.

In general, in Belarus, the incidence of HAV over the past 15 years has been characterized by a moderate downward trend. Since 2018, the incidence rate has not exceeded one case per 100,000 people. At the same time, this infection is characterized by periodic ups and downs in the incidence at intervals of 4-5 years.
