Two fathers have taken the concept of road rage to another level by attempting to kill each other by shooting each other, each hitting the other’s daughter. However, only the second to have opened fire will be accused, because of a bottle of water.

This incredible story, revealed Tuesday by the daily “USA Today”, occurred last October in Florida.

According to the results of the police investigation obtained by the daily, William Hale, 36, and Frank Allison, 44, were each returning home with their families when they had trouble on the road. If the versions differ on how the conflict began, the two men admitted to having multiplied the dangerous maneuvers towards each other, multiplying the accelerations and sudden braking while trying to cut each other.

The conflict escalated until Hale decided to throw a water bottle from his vehicle towards Allison’s.

In retaliation, Frank Allison grabbed a pistol and opened fire at William Hale’s vehicle, hitting his 5-year-old daughter in the leg instead. Hale, who also had a gun handy, fired seven or eight times. One of the bullets hit the back of Allison’s 14-year-old daughter.

Both children were hospitalized, but survived their injuries.

Both men were arrested in the aftermath of the shooting and were to be charged. However, after investigation, the authorities judged that only one of the two deserved to be accused of attempted murder.

Under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law – a law giving the right to use “reasonable force” in self-defense – authorities consider the water bottle thrown by William Hale gave Frank Allison ample right to retaliate by opening fire.

“The water bottle had liquid inside, and [Hale] threw it with malicious intent, intending it to enter the Allison’s vehicle and possibly hit one of the occupants. Thus, the bottle can be qualified as a deadly projectile”, assessed the assistant state attorney, Roth Huband, in a decision relayed by “USA Today”.

“The actions of William Hale justify the use of deadly force by Frank Allison,” he added.

The first father to have opened fire will therefore not face any charges, while the second will have to answer several counts, including three for attempted murder.
