It was an earthquake that hit the Squadra Azzurra earlier this week. While few, if any, elements had suggested this, Roberto Mancini decided to slam the door in the middle of summer, a few days even before his list of players summoned for the September matches (9 in North Macedonia and the 12th against Ukraine as part of the Euro 2024 qualifiers). He should take charge of the Saudi selection.
This surprise resignation is rather badly experienced in Italy because the timing questions. The case even turned to a settling of accounts between the now former coach and the president of the federation, Gabriele Gravina. Communication was becoming more and more difficult between the European champion staff in the summer of 2021 and the authorities. Mancini preferred to slam the door when the Saudi offer reached him.

Spalletti has the favors of the federation
Faced with the urgency of the situation, the FIGC quickly started looking for a new coach. Two names quickly came out of the hat, namely Antonio Conte and Luciano Spalletti. The first has the advantage of being free, of being a great player in Italian football as a player then a coach, and of having already held the position between 2014 and 2016. But it is the second who has obtained the favors of the federation to believe the italian press.

The FIGC has agreed to pay the €3m clause which still binds Spalletti (64) to Naples. The latter has just won the Scudetto brilliantly last May with the Partenopei. He should sign a contract up to Euro 2024, with an option to extend for the 2026 World Cup. Like Mancini, he will play a fairly large role as manager of the U20 and U21 selections. The training of the technical staff must still be defined between the federal choices and those of the future coach.
