Statements by Roger Waters

The British musician and former leader of the band Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, known for his anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic statements, assured that Israel “makes up stories” about what happened on October 7 during the massacre of Hamas terrorists against civilians.

Waters alluded to unfounded conspiracy theories and, without saying so, to the possibility that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government could be aware of what was going to happen.

“How the hell did the Israelis not know this was going to happen? I’m still a little bit down that rabbit hole. I mean, didn’t the Israeli army in those 11, 10 or 11 fields hear the bangs when they exploded? Whatever they had to fly to cross the border? There is something very suspicious about that,” he declared in an interview with lawyer and journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Asked whether the savage massacre of civilians perpetrated by Hamas can be justified, the Briton assured that he still does not know if they were responsible.

“Was they justified in resisting the occupation? Yes. They are absolutely legally and morally obliged to resist the occupation since 1967″, he added.

Waters avoided acknowledging the incontestable evidence of the events that occurred on October 7 at the kibbutzim and the music festival, where thousands of civilians were massacred in cold blood by Hamas terrorists. Instead, he mentioned the deaths of Israeli military personnel, which he claims would not constitute a war crime.

He also maintains that Israelis make up stories about beheading babies, despite compelling evidence presented by Israel.

“The thing was blown out of proportion by the Israelis making up stories about beheading babies,” he said.

The musician believes that the truth of what happened on October 7 will never be known, even though the Hamas massacre against civilians is visible to the entire world.

“But what we do know is whether or not it was a false flag operation, or whatever happened, and we don’t know if we’ll ever get a real story. It is always very difficult to know what really happened. They call it their 9/11. What the hell happened on 9/11 in North America? Nobody knows. Clearly, the official narrative has gaping holes. And anyway, we’re not going to get into 9/11″, he indicated.

Asked about his rejection of Israel and his frequent anti-Semitic statements, he attacked the Jewish State, arguing that “they consider that people who profess the Jewish religion have a series of rights completely different from everyone else. This is fundamentally important. That is why in my message I say: do you subscribe or not to the idea of equal human rights? Because as soon as you don’t, you’re a Nazi. And I know you can’t say Nazi.”

Waters has a long history of controversy surrounding statements of marked anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

Last May, he was the protagonist of a controversy in the shows he gave on the 17th and 18th at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin. The British singer generated strong condemnation for having used a black uniform during the shows, similar to those used by the Nazi SS, and the image of Anne Frank.

The controversial references and allusions to the Holocaust began in the run-up to the show. According to local journalists, a screen projected the following words: “The show will start in 10 minutes and a court in Frankfurt has ruled that I am not an anti-Semite (…) To be clear, I condemn anti-Semitism without reservation.”

This message made reference to the decision of the Frankfurt Administrative Court, which last February ruled against the city council’s decision to cancel Waters’ performance due to allegations of anti-Semitism against the British.

According to municipal authorities, Waters is “one of the most prominent anti-Semites in the world,” recalling that the former leader of Pink Floyd constantly promotes a boycott of Israel.

In one part of the show, Waters appeared before his fans in a black jacket with a red armband (alluding to the aesthetics of the film The Wall, but also very similar to the Nazi SS uniform) pointing a fake rifle. The set also included a giant inflatable pig with various symbols and words – including a prominent Jewish star – floating above the audience while “Third Reich-style banners but with crossed hammers instead of swastikas” hung from the ceiling.

But his allusion to the Holocaust and the Nazi regime did not end there. Faithful to her transgressive and provocative style, in a segment of the show she also included the names of activists murdered by the authorities of different countries, among them the anti-Nazi activist Sophie Scholl; the Iranian Mahsa Amini, who was murdered by the Tehran morality police; the African American George Floyd; and Anne Frank, the Jewish teenager murdered by the Nazi regime in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Anne Frank’s name came right after that of Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran Palestinian-American journalist who is believed to have been shot dead last May by Israeli soldiers during a shootout with Palestinian militants.

Waters often finds himself involved in controversies around this issue. Already on a tour that he carried out between 2010 and 2013, he had included on stage a balloon in the shape of a pig in which, among other symbols, there was a Star of David.

The Briton is a fervent defender of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to boycott and divest funds from Israel. In 2014, for example, he questioned the Rolling Stones for having performed on Israeli soil.

He even bought the State of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians with the Holocaust.

In recent months, the former Pink Floyd leader has also come under fire for his stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During an interview with the German newspaper Berliner Zeitung, he had defended Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade the neighboring country.

That controversial interview also brought him strong criticism. Among them the novelist Polly Samson, married to David Gilmour, another member of Pink Floyd. In a strong defense, she called him “anti-Semitic, Putin apologist and liar, thief, hypocrite, tax evader, misogynist, and megalomaniac.”
