Rome: night curfew due to the presence of wild boars in the streets | The municipality will fence the Insugherata park, where the animals would come from

In the north of Romaa group of neighbors denounced the presence of entire families of boars touring the streets of the city, so they decided, in the absence of an immediate response from the authorities, to decree a “night curfew”.

Animals “are getting closer to people, and not just at night, but who walk the streets at all hours of the day“, assured a group of residents of Aurelio, one of the neighborhoods where the passage of wild boars was registered.

This Wednesday, in fact, a neighbor had an encounter with one of them in which she was injured. According to her account, she was walking her dog when she came across a wild boar female and her young next to a dump. “The mother had her eyes on me and I understood that maybe she was scared too, so I I grabbed my dog and ran to hide“, said the woman.

In his attempt to escape, was bitten by the boar. “I was on my head, I screamed and my dog came to my defense,” said the neighbor, who was assisted by a motorcyclist who was driving down the street and then taken to a hospital.

Due to the concern of the neighbors, animal protection organizations warned that wild boars are not aggressive animals. They only defend themselves “if they feel threatened themselves or their families,” explained Massimo Vetturi, director of the wildlife unit.

The authorities of Rome, questioned by the residents due to the lack of answers, announced a package of measures to contain the situation, among them fence the areas of the Insugherata park –a green lung in the north of Rome through which, they suppose, animals enter the city– and carry out the Garbage pickup more often than usual.

Wild boars, native to the African continent, are mammals that can reach up to 130 kilos and 1.60 meters long.

They were introduced by humans in areas of Europe, America and Oceania and are included by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in the list of the 100 most harmful invasive alien species in the world.
