Rosstat Data Leak Reveals Over 450,000 Russian War Deaths

A hacked data leak from Russia’s statistical agency, Rosstat, reveals more than 450,000 deaths resulting from the war against Ukraine, according to reporting by t-online.de.

The leaked dataset originated from an intrusion by the hackergroups Silent Crow and Belarus Cyber Partisans at the end of October, t-online.de reported. Rosstat acknowledged a security incident over the weekend but denied that data had been extracted. The hackers claimed to have downloaded approximately 23 terabytes of information.

The Moscow Times analyzed a random sample of 50 names from the files and cross-referenced them with logs maintained by the BBC and the independent media outlet Mediazona. That verification matches the broader scale of casualties documented through open sources, t-online.de reported. The figures published by Silent Crow cover both military personnel and civilians killed during attacks or amid the Ukrainian push into the Russian region of Kursk.

A second group, the Belarus Cyber Partisans, reported a lower total of 393,881 deaths, counting only military members and civilians who died from combat or long-term war consequences. That group’s figures also include more than 32,000 soldiers who succumbed to injuries sustained at least a year prior.

Independent tracking by the BBC and Mediazona stands at 285,023 confirmed names of dead Russian soldiers. Because many casualties remain unrecorded publicly, the BBC estimates the true fatality range between 518,224 and 633,384.

Source or Estimator Reported or Estimated Figure Scope
Rosstat Leaked Data (Silent Crow) Over 450,000 Soldiers and civilians, including Kursk region
Rosstat Leaked Data (Cyber Partisans) 393,881 Military and direct conflict-related deaths
BBC & Mediazona (Verified) 285,023 Nammed and verified Russian soldiers
BBC Open-Source Estimates 518,224 to 633,384 Projected total military fatalities

The British government stated in September that fatalities exceeded half a million, with total casualties including wounded and missing reaching up to 1.5 million people, according to t-online.de. Russia has not published official casualty figures since September 2022 and consistently rejects independent estimates.
