British comedian Russell Brand has spoken out following allegations of sexual violence and rape. It was an “extraordinary and painful week,” said the 48-year-old in a video that he published on Saturday night on several online platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter).

“Thank you so much for your support and for questioning the information that was presented to you,” said the ex-husband of singer Katy Perry (38) in the three-minute video. He did not comment specifically on the allegations, but instead criticized the British government, large IT companies and media companies.

Several women have made allegations of rape and assault

According to British reports, several women have made serious allegations against Brand – including rape, physical assault and emotional abuse. The charges relate to incidents from 2006 to 2013. At the time, Brand was at the height of his career as a presenter on BBC radio and the TV channel Channel 4. On Monday, police in London confirmed that they had filed a complaint against Brand for one of having received sexual assault. The incident is said to have occurred in 2003.
