In a Telegram video, oligarch Andrei Kovalyov spoke of a “terrible war” against Ukraine. He sees Russia “humiliated”.

Moscow – With the entrepreneur Andrei Kovalyov, a prominent representative of the Russian economy has once again spoken critically about the Ukraine war. “This is not a military special operation, but a terrible war,” the US broadcaster quoted CNN Kovalev from a video from Monday (May 8). In the recording, the entrepreneur talks about developments in the invasion of Ukraine that are “disappointing” from a Russian perspective.

At the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he too had assumed that Kiev could be taken within a few weeks without much resistance, explained Kovalyov and was surprised that more than a year later there was no end in sight to the war. Instead, he sees more and more negative developments that bring various problems for Russia.

“Terrible war” against Ukraine: Russian oligarch sees many problems

Kovalyov spoke, for example, of the high Russian losses, which were reflected not only in a number of fallen and injured soldiers, but also in war zones that had been recaptured – from the Ukrainian point of view: liberated – since the beginning of the Russian attack. He cited the sinking of the Russian warship Moskva, the attack on the Crimean bridge and the alleged drone attack on the Kremlin as examples of “humiliation” in Russia.

The negative economic consequences of the war should not be underestimated either, said Kovalyov. Because of the war, “the whole world” is against Russia, so 122 countries at the United Nations General Assembly agreed that Russia is to be regarded as the aggressor in the Ukraine war. Above all, Russia’s international reputation should give Kovalyov, who is involved in a Russian entrepreneurs’ association, a headache.

Ukraine war: Oligarch offers Putin help through Russia’s entrepreneurs

According to that CNNreport, the 65-year-old entrepreneur, who was a member of the Russian People’s Duma until a few years ago, appears to have deliberately avoided positioning himself as an opponent of the war. One reason for this could be that criticism of Vladimir Putin, his government and his war can have serious consequences. A number of entrepreneurs, celebrities and journalists critical of Putin have already left the country. In another video, which he also released earlier this week, Kovalyov called out to the Kremlin leadership CNN to seek support from Russia’s “sovereign entrepreneurs” to “ensure victory in the war.”

However, it seems doubtful that Putin will take the entrepreneur’s offer more seriously than the criticism of his unsuccessful war. The Kremlin ruler might not like harsh criticism, especially on the day of the traditional “Victory Day” parade – the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. The traditional military parade is also intended to demonstrate Russia’s military strength. In the current social climate in Russia, which is weakened by growing doubts and war-weariness, the Kremlin government can probably do little with loud criticism. (saka)
