Saint Vincent and the Grenadines donates 235 tons of wheat flour to Cuba 2024-03-27 06:03:34

A donation of 235 metric tons of flour to Cuba was recently made by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The shipment is still on its way, and should arrive at the port of Mariel in a few days.

In this sense, this donation would help alleviate the acute crisis that the country is experiencing in terms of food.

For this reason, Carlos Ernesto Rodríguez, Cuban ambassador to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, thanked that nation for the “solidarity and humanitarian” gesture.

Let us remember that, in mid-March, a ship with 8,300 tons of wheat flour also arrived on the island. However, this amount was used to try to stabilize bread production in the basic basket, from Ciego de Ávila to Guantánamo.

According to the Cuban Minister of the Food Industry, Alberto López Díaz, the shipment responded to “management by the highest leadership of the Cuban Government.”

All this, with the aim of alleviating the current crisis in state bread production, which affects millions of people throughout the country.

But, this is not all, another ship with wheat flour arrived at the port of Cienfuegos, also in March. In addition, new shipments are expected in central and western Cuba to normalize production.

However, the authorities in question state that the use of “extenders” up to 15% in the production of the product will be maintained.

And national productions?

It is no secret that currently only flour is produced, in Cuba, in the Cienfuegos mill, with a capacity of 240 tons per day.

Then, many difficulties caused insufficient availability to guarantee the product, according to Zaily Pérez Hernández, commercial director of the Company. Molinera Cuban.

Although only the Cienfuegos mill is active, Cuba has four other mills; three in Havana and one in Santiago.

Meanwhile, the Government insists on looking for alternatives to facilitate the purchase of flour. In this sense, the private sector intervenes, which markets the product at market prices through small business chains.
