With 62.5 percent of the vote, Auinger clearly prevailed against the communist Kay-Michael Dankl. As an analysis by statistics professor Erich Neuwirth from the University of Vienna shows, around 8,500 people, almost all of those who voted for ÖVP candidate Florian Kreibich in the first round, voted for Auinger in the second round.
The majority of votes from the liberal candidate Paul Dürnberger also went to Auinger. The votes for the green candidate Anna Schiester were roughly evenly split, with slightly more voting for Dankl. The voters of SALZ founder Christoph Ferch also voted for Auinger almost unanimously.
SPÖ-KPÖ exchange
In the first round of voting, Auinger was just ahead with 29.4 percent compared to Dankl (28 percent). Interesting detail: A few hundred voters who had voted for Auinger in the first round turned their backs on him last Sunday and voted for the KPÖ candidate Dankl in the runoff.
Neuwirth’s analysis is a statistical estimate that only takes into account the votes cast at the polling station. In the mayoral runoff election on Sunday, that was around three quarters of the total votes cast.
