Samsung regained its position as the largest seller of smartphones by taking the lead from Apple, as Chinese rivals close the gap with both market leaders, the International Data Corporation (IDC) reported on Monday.

The South Korea-based tech company overtook Apple at a time when global smartphone sales grew nearly 8% in the first quarter of this year to 289.4 million, the IDC said, citing its preliminary data.

This is the third consecutive quarter of growth in the global smartphone market, which suggests that a recovery from the decline in the sector is underway, according to the IDC.

Vice president of IDC’s Global Consumer Devices and Mobility Tracking team, Ryan Reith, expected major smartphone companies to gain share and smaller brands to jockey for position as the recovery progresses.

Samsung sold 60.1 million smartphones in the first quarter of this year, almost 21% of the market, according to IDC figures.

Apple sold 50.1 million iPhones, just over 17% of the market in the same period, the market analysis firm added.

Apple’s smartphone sales fell 9.6% in a quarterly comparison, while Samsung’s fell less than 1%.

Xiaomi, based in China, ranked third, and grew its sales by 33%; and Transsion, in fourth position, grew around 85% to 28.5 million units.

“While Apple managed to take over the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully reaffirmed itself as the leading smartphone supplier in the first quarter,” Reith said.

Nabila Popal, research director at IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team, said: “There is a power shift among the top 5 companies, which will likely continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world.
