FC Barcelona and French central defender Samuel Umtiti have prematurely ended their partnership after seven years. The 29-year-old’s contract, originally dated until 2026, has been terminated by mutual agreement, the Catalans announced on Friday.

The later world champion switched from his hometown club Olympique Lyon to Barça in 2016 for around 25 million euros and played 133 competitive games for the club until August 2022, in which he scored two goals. After a knee injury in his third LaLiga season, the left foot has not been able to fight for a regular place in recent years.
The latest transfers at a glance
He spent the past season on loan at US Lecce in Serie A, where he made a total of 25 appearances and was on the defensive, especially in the last third of the season. In Italy, Umtiti was recently able to increase its market value, which had fallen from EUR 70 million to EUR 2 million, to EUR 4 million. How the defender will continue is unclear.
