Saudi-Led Coalition Intercepts Houthi Missiles Targeting Riyadh Amid Escalating Yemen Conflict

Saudi Arabia’s air defences intercepted three ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles targeting Riyadh and the Eastern province on November 8, 2026, amid an escalating regional conflict that has shattered a 2022 UN-brokered truce. Al Jazeera reported that the missile interceptions triggered loud explosions across the Saudi capital and activated emergency warning systems in Dammam, Al-Ahsa, and Abqaiq. The renewed fighting has also become a front in the wider war that began with US and Israeli attacks on Iran in February.

The latest barrage sparked immediate security concerns after a projectile damaged a tower belonging to national oil company Saudi Aramco in Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD). Witnesses confirmed structural damage to the building, though official confirmation regarding the extent of the structural impact or casualties remained pending from Saudi authorities.

Missile Volleys and Air Defence Interceptions Across the Kingdom

Major-General Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, detailed the defensive operations in statements posted on X. Air defences successfully destroyed two ballistic missiles aimed at Riyadh before later intercepting two cruise missiles over both the capital and the southern regions. An earlier ballistic missile targeting the oil-rich Eastern province was also intercepted and destroyed before reaching its objective.

The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, claimed responsibility for multiple operations targeting Aramco oil facilities, Riyadh airport, and military installations near the border. Saree asserted that the group carried out six separate operations during the latest wave, coinciding with what he described as an intensive air campaign by the coalition across multiple Yemeni governorates.

Air Attacks Kill Dozens in Village Near Sanaa

The aerial escalations followed a devastating day of reported coalition air attacks in Yemen. According to the Houthi-run Health Ministry spokesperson, Anees al-Asbahi, at least 33 people—including eight women and 13 children—were killed in strikes targeting the village of al-Shariyah in the Bani Hushaish district east of Sanaa.

Medical personnel faced severe challenges during the operations, with Abdul-Aziz al-Dailami, director of Sehatuna Hospital in Sanaa, noting that first responders were among those trapped under rubble and hit by continuing strikes. The UN estimates that fighting has displaced nearly 300,000 people and killed over 1,600 since the breakdown of the ceasefire in July, triggered by a Houthi naval blockade on Saudi ports and subsequent territorial offensives.
