Several schools in the country’s capital, Luanda, will earn Ecopoints, under a protocol signed this Monday, April 17, between UNESCO, Coca-Cola/Refriango and Nação Verde.

The cooperation protocol serves to promote environmental education and install ecopoints in at least 10 schools in Luanda and train students and teachers in environmental education.

The “Environmental Education in Schools” initiative reinforces the ongoing actions of Coca-Cola and Refriango in promoting environmental sustainability, the collection and treatment of solid waste in the country and the preservation of the oceans.

The project “Environmental Education in Schools” that the National Commission UNESCO in Angola, Coca-Cola/Refriango and Associação Nação Verde will take environmental education to ten schools in Luanda. The initiative will benefit around 20,000 students from the age of 13 with training and awareness actions on the importance of collecting and treating solid waste and how to contribute to environmental sustainability in the country. Teachers will also receive specific training on the subject.

The protocol between CNU, Coca-Cola/Refriango and ANV also foresees the installation of ecopoints in the 10 educational institutions of the 1st and 2nd Secondary Cycle of the Network of Schools Associated with UNESCO.

The schools selected for the project – “Environmental Education in Schools” are: Medium Institute of Economics of Luanda, Medium Industrial Institute of Luanda, Medium Commercial Institute of Luanda, Institute of Telecommunications of Luanda, Medium Polytechnic Institute Alda Lara, Complexo Escolar Teresiana de Viana, College No. 1140 1º de Maio, College No. 1124 Nzinga Mbande, Castelo Health School and Lyceum No. 5106 Neves Bendinha.
To mark the International Day of the Oceans, which is celebrated on the 8th of June, the protocol between UNESCO, Coca-Cola/Refriango and ANV also establishes the competition “Planet Ocean: The Tides are Changing”.

The initiative is part of the “Ecomovimento Oceanos” and challenges students and teachers from participating schools to propose solutions to combat plastic pollution in the oceans, in line with the 14th Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations for 2030, which aims to conserve and use sustainably use oceans, tides and marine resources for sustainable development.

The winning project will be awarded at the Ecological Fair of the National Commission of Angola for UNESCO, scheduled for June 5, World Environment Day, in Luanda.

During the event, which was opened by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Paula Coelho, the Permanent Secretary of Angola’s National Commission for UNESCO of the CNU, Alexandre de Sousa Costa, indicated that “environmental education in schools is one of the ways solution for the current environmental crises, insofar as we must prepare students and teachers so that, in the best way, they can contribute to these issues, make them aware of these challenges and make them managers of waste. This will contribute to ensuring sustainable development, in harmony with the guidelines issued by International Organizations and adopted by Angola.”

With a long track record in raising environmental awareness in Luanda, ANV undertakes the training of students and teachers, as well as the management of ecopoints in schools and the collection of solid waste deposited there.

The President of Associação Nação Verde, Nuno Cruz, says that the creation of Ecopoints in educational institutions “it is imperative that environmental education projects be developed in educational institutions, because it stimulates the socio-environmental awareness of the school community”.

According to that official, “the implementation of ecopoints in schools contributes, in a way, to meeting the challenges of eliminating solid urban waste pollution in communities. At the same time that it stimulates the valorization of waste, it helps to promote reverse logistics and the circular economy”.

The “Environmental Education in Schools” project also reaffirms Coca-Cola’s outstanding involvement in promoting environmental sustainability in Angola.

Senior Marketing Manager for Coca-Cola in Angola, Paula Lima, argues that “environmental education is a safe bet due to its multiplier effect and the potential to create aware and active citizens”.

“These are the change agents we need. Students in this program will learn how to change their consumption behavior and how to intervene in a positive way in our surroundings. Environmental sustainability is a long-term project in which we all have to participate.

Through the JAMII platform and the World Without Waste campaign, Coca-Cola assumes its responsibility to energize and involve all citizens in this urgent mission, which will make Angola a cleaner, more resilient country with a healthy environment that benefits us. not just for us, but for future generations as well.”

Refriango Marketing Administrator, Tânia Jardim, a company that produces and distributes the Coca-Cola brands in Angola, underlines, for her part, that “the protocol signed today reinforces the intention of Refriango and UNESCO, now together with the ANV, to contribute to the development and training of young people in the area of ​​health, civic education and environmental education, an objective that was protocolized for the first time in December last year”.

“We believe that partnerships between different actors around a very important common good, such as environmental sustainability, are fundamental. It is vital that we are all aligned – institutions, companies and civil society – and in this regard, Refriango has stood out for its high impact social responsibility actions.

In this sense, he continues, in addition to the “Environmental Education in Schools” project, “this protocol also foresees stimulating the creation of sustainable ecological projects in the student community.”

Alongside the programs launched today, Coca-Cola and Refriango are running a series of projects with partner institutions, which reinforce environmental sustainability in the country. These actions include cleaning beaches, education and environmental awareness in schools and communities and stimulating the circular economy.

At the beginning of the year, an ambitious initiative allowed for the installation of eight ecopoints in Luanda with a view to recycling and reusing paper, cardboard, glass and PET plastic, with which it is expected to collect more than 5 thousand tons of solid waste by the end of the year. year.
