scientists create an on-demand pill to take before sex

And if taking a daily birth control pills was soon only a distant memory? This could well be the case thanks to researchers from Stanford University, California (USA), who have just created method of contraception very promising.

Their study was published on April 25 in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Sexual and Reproductive Health. For the occasion, nine women aged 18 to 35 were recruited and followed for several menstrual cycles. They all received a combination of ulipristal acetate and meloxicam. As indicated by the site VIDALulipristal acetate is an “emergency contraceptive”. Meloxicammeanwhile, is used to fight “against inflammation and pain”. It is notably prescribed in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Scientists have found that the combination of these two drugs is very promising. Indeed, it “disturbs ovulation at the peak of the luteal thrust”, i.e. the days preceding the release of an egg. When taking, the women saw their menstrual cycle lengthen, thus going from 29 to 32 days. Their progesterone levels were also lower.

For the researchers, this “cocktail” is a “promising candidate for evaluation as a pericoital oral contraceptive”, i.e. before sex. This new birth control pills could therefore be taken on demand. According to the study, it would be able to interrupt ovulation “when (…)
