PHOENIX – Governor Katie Hobbs announced an additional $40 million investment Thursday to secure the state’s water future. Hobbs highlighted in a press conference the investments in water infrastructure that have been made in the state.

The state government announced that it would use $40 million from the Federal Rescue Plan Law to increase water conservation efforts. The resources will be administered by the Arizona Department of Water Resources, according to Hobbs, adding that it will also be used to develop grants and other financial support to promote sustainable groundwater management.

The state’s newly created Water Policy Council will now also be responsible for policy recommendations to modernize the state’s groundwater policy.

In addition, state leaders and Hobbs released the results of a groundwater model projection study showing that, over a 100-year period, approximately 4% of groundwater demand (4.86 million acre-feet) in the region will not be covered unless additional measures are taken.

The announcements made at the press conference come after the Phoenix City Council vote to leave 150,000 acre-feet of the Colorado River right in Lake Mead over the next three years. It is a water resource that the city has used consistently in the past.
