Sedentary work: do I need starches? – Featured

05 avril 2023

No, starches are not exclusively reserved for runners and other seasoned athletes! Because these foods are also a real fuel for our brain. But prefer them in “full” version. For what ?

Pasta, bread, rice, semolina, potatoes… can be eaten every day. At least one serving a day is also the recommendation of Public Health France, provided you choose whole foods. So wholemeal bread, wholegrain rice, wholemeal pasta, etc.

These provide us with “complex carbohydrates”. In other words – and unlike sweet foods such as sugar, confectionery, pastries, dairy desserts…- they provide energy that the body is able to use gradually. The body as a whole, including our brain, which therefore needs complete starchy foods to be able to function over time, particularly in terms of memory and concentration abilities.

Not associated with a way of life

Whole starches are also characterized by their high fiber content, compared to refined products such as white bread for example. Fiber plays a major role in our health. They are involved, for example, in the prevention of conditions such as diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases. They also have a satiating effect during the meal and therefore help to regulate appetite.

Not to mention that they “have the power to increase the feeling of satiety (between meals), that is to say that they avoid feeling hungry again quickly. And have the advantage of promoting intestinal transit », supplements Public Health France. In conclusion, the consumption of starches – complete – should not be associated with this or that way of life. It must simply be part of daily food hygiene.
