The geriatrician and associate professor at the School of Public Health, Réjean Hébert, judges that the hospital is not the right place to accommodate seniors awaiting a transfer to CHSLDs or a return home with adequate services.

Speaking to Alexandre Dubé via QUB radio, Mr. Hébert explained that the direct impact concerns seniors caught in this situation.

“They do not receive all the care support they need to support their autonomy,” he added.

In addition, a patient who would cost more in terms of care cannot be admitted to the hospital center since an elderly person occupies these beds.

The Dr Réjean Hébert mentioned that “we cannot continue with the status quo as we currently know it and use institutionalization as an intermediate resource as the solution.”

Listen to the interview with Réjean Hébert, geriatrician and associate professor at the School of Public Health and researcher at the Center for Research on Aging in Sherbrooke, on Alexandre Dubé’s show via QUB radio:

The one who was Minister of Health and Social Services and Minister responsible for Seniors under Pauline Marois stressed that if this way of doing things continues, it will be necessary to build between 2,500 and 4,000 CHSLD places per year for the next 15 years.

“It’s impossible! It’s extremely expensive!” he exclaimed.

For these seniors’ homes, the creation of a single place would cost a million dollars, he said. According to information given by Réjean Hébert, the sum could reach $60 billion.

The geriatrician confessed that the elderly want to receive care at home.

“Until we make this very important shift towards home care, we will not succeed. We’re not done having people ending up in the emergency room,” he said.

In this interview, Dr Réjean also indicated how to obtain productivity gains in order to achieve this.
