Serbian international Borisa Simanic had a kidney removed during the World Cup in Manila. That was necessary following there were complications during an operation, as the Serbian association KSS announced on Monday. The reason for the medical intervention was a situation during the Serbs’ first World Cup match in the Philippine capital once morest South Sudan.

The 25-year-old Simanic was hit in the kidney area by an opponent and might not be used once more in the 115:83 victory. The power forward, who last played for Spanish club Basket Zaragoza at club level, was taken to hospital and underwent first surgery on the night of 30/31 August. Simanic lost a lot of blood in the process, explained coach Svetislav Pesic.

After the operation, problems were identified that made a further operation necessary. The organ was finally removed on Sunday. “We expect and wish that the post-operative course will run smoothly following this operation,” said the Serbian team doctor Dragan Radovanovic in a statement from the association.
