Storm low “Poly” in NRW: Fallen trees block roads

In northern Münsterland, trees have fallen and branches on roads. Overall, the situation is calm, said police spokesmen in several circles. In other regions of North Rhine-Westphalia, gusts of wind did not initially cause any major damage.

In Dortmund, the zoo was closed as a precaution in the early afternoon due to the storm warning. In the Steinfurt district, several trees fell on smaller side streets and blocked them. The fire brigade had to move in with chainsaws and remove the obstacles. According to the emergency services, there were no injuries.

Further danger from falling branches

“Poly” in NRW is not as violent as storm “Lambert” in June. Nevertheless, caution is still required. Because the trees are already full of leaves and it has been very dry for a long time, branches can easily break.

There will also be showers and thunderstorms in some areas. During the night the showers will gradually subside.

Severe weather warning for the north – woman dies

The German Weather Service has issued severe weather warnings for northern Germany. A woman was fatally injured in Rhede an der Ems, Lower Saxony. A tree fell on the pedestrian. According to police, she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

In the Netherlands, the storm has been causing traffic chaos since the morning hours. Dutch meteorologists are already talking about the strongest summer storm ever measured. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled, and train services have been partially suspended. The weather institute KNM issued a red category warning for the provinces of North Holland, Flevoland, Friesland and the IJsselmeer area – the highest possible warning level. A woman was killed by a tree in Haarlem.

Many holidaymakers are also traveling in the Netherlands – for example on campsites. “I hope that everyone will take the warnings seriously and stay in protected areas,” said WDR meteorologist Jürgen Vogt. “Even this morning we had severe hurricane gusts of up to 140 kilometers per hour.”

Summer is coming back to NRW from Friday

The good news is that the weather will calm down on Thursday. The meteorologists expect variable cloudy to clear weather. On Friday, people can look forward to sunny weather. The temperatures climb to a summery 27 to 31 degrees.
