“We want to be at the forefront again, but we know that the competition is very tough. The two relegated teams TG Hanau and the Karlsruhe Wizards can play at the top,” says Peter Eberhardt, who has been the coach of the SG again since last season and recently reached fourth place with them.

With Alexander Kuhn, a long-standing top performer has left Mannheim. “He is very busy with work and family and just wants to take a well-deserved break from basketball. “We begrudge him with all our hearts because Alex has helped the club a lot for many years,” says Eberhardt. “This loss hits us hard as a team, but I think we have found a very good new player for the wing position.” The coach is referring to 21-year-old Julian Surblys, who came to Mannheim from BIS Speyer and impressed in preparation . The 2.03 meter giant was trained in the youth ranks at USC Heidelberg and already has experience in the Pro B, the third highest league in German basketball.

Also new is the American Chris Teasley Junior. The 32-year-old, who toured with the Harlem Globetrotters for two years after attending college (Virginia Wesleyan), has professional experience in Ireland and Australia. “He is a player for the development position,” says Eberhardt. An important addition as Joris Bestert, the regular playmaker, broke his elbow in preparation and will be out for a few more weeks.

Also new is an old acquaintance: Max Bohrmann. The center, who was a key performer in Mannheim’s 2017/18 promotion season to the 1st Regional League, returned in the summer. “He has had a long break, but with his experience and size he is a very important addition for us,” says Eberhardt.

Some players watched the national team’s world championship title together on Sunday. “We had a test match that day,” says Eberhardt, who believes that the triumph could have a particular impact on youth work. “But actually we already have a lot of children and young people at SG who are enthusiastic about basketball,” he emphasizes. Youth work has been very important to the people of Mannheim since the SG was founded in 2003 – and continues to do so. The motto: Players are not bought. The club has done very well with this in the past. bol
