Rays ace left-hander Shan McClanahan will undergo Tommy John surgery, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said before the series opener against the Giants.
McClanahan will likely miss the entire 2024 season.
The starter went on the 60-day disabled list Saturday after being diagnosed with a stiff left forearm. He had abandoned his Aug. 2 start after giving up five runs in four innings (82 pitches) against the Yankees.
McClanahan had a stellar first half of the season and was named to the All-Star Game for the second straight year. He began to hit hurdles in late June and made just three starts in July.
