Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Tainan Zhongshan Store Closes

After standing as a retail anchor in Tainan for three decades, the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Tainan Zhongshan Store is closing its doors on October 31, 2026. As the shopping center prepares to shut down, its once-grand interior features face an unexpected reality, with customized crystal chandeliers being heavily discounted down to one-tenth of their original value without finding buyers.

Opened in 1996, the Zhongshan branch was Shin Kong Mitsukoshi’s fourth location nationwide and played a pivotal role in the shift of Tainan’s commercial district. Over the years, the establishment helped draw steady crowds to the Zhongshan Road station-front commercial area, competing directly with neighboring rivals in the city.

Three Decades of Retail History in Tainan

Senior employees who worked at the branch since its opening recalled that because the land was originally held by Shin Kong Life Insurance, the first-generation building featured large glass curtain walls resembling an insurance headquarters. To establish a modern aesthetic and counter rival department stores, the entrance was deliberately designed with double-row short escalators.

Early Shin Kong Mitsukoshi branches traditionally featured two signature design elements: grand crystal chandeliers and bronze lion sculptures symbolizing the company’s founder, Wu Huo-shih. At the Zhongshan location, the centerpiece bronze lion sculpture titled “Auspicious Lion in Harmony” was commissioned from renowned Taiwanese sculptor Yang Ying-feng for the store’s establishment. The artwork depicts a traditional fierce stance combined with a playful posture holding a ball, representing peace, protection, and commercial prosperity.

The Fate of the Store’s Signature Features

Changes in architectural aesthetics and spatial planning mean that newer Shin Kong Mitsukoshi branches no longer incorporate crystal chandeliers or bronze lions. As the Zhongshan store concludes its operations, the entrance bronze lion sculpture will be relocated to the Tainan Ximen store to continue guarding the premises.

In contrast, two custom-made Swarovski crystal chandeliers, which were originally ordered for 2 million New Taiwan dollars each, have been marked down to 200,000 New Taiwan dollars apiece. Despite being discounted to a fraction of their initial cost, the fixtures have yet to attract prospective buyers as the closing date arrives.

Commercial Evolution Along Zhongshan Road

The closure of the Tainan Zhongshan branch marks the end of an era for the local station-front retail circle that developed through intense competition among early department stores in the district. While staff members look back on the building’s distinct architectural details as snapshots of past retail trends, the transition highlights how commercial centers in Tainan continue to evolve as newer hubs take center stage.
