A video that has gone viral shows the 36-year-old man running to board the ferry in the port of Piraeus, Athens, just in time with the ramp still down.
The man is seen struggling three times to get on board with members of the crew preventing him, then finally being pushed by one of them, which knocks him off balance, causing him to fall in the sea.
Despite the cries of the passengers, seeing the passenger in the water and fearing for his life, the ferry leaves the port as planned in the direction of Heraklion, Crete, leaving the man to drown instead of coming to his aid.
Seeing the video on social media, port authorities then ordered the ferry to turn around and return to Piraeus where the captain and three other crew members were arrested.
“It’s hard to understand, it’s an inconceivable, intolerable tragedy,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Facebook. “It’s not the country we want.”
The Attica group, which notably includes Blue Star ferries and Hellenic Seaways, declared itself shocked and “ready to cooperate with the authorities in order to allow a thorough investigation”.
