Shortage of staff: the post office closes at noon

Chronicle

There are currently no continuous opening times for almost ten Vienna Post branches. You’re on a lunch break. The reason for this is a mixture of the holiday season and sick leave. The aim of the closures is to relieve the employees.

For several months, a few post offices in Vienna have been closed at lunchtime – either for one hour, some even for two. A sign can be seen on a branch in Margareten, for example, which reads: “Due to the current situation, opening times are temporarily restricted.”

Vacation and sick leave as a problem

The spokesman for Austrian Post, Michael Leitgeb, cites the holiday season and the high number of sick leave as reasons for the irregular opening times. However, new staff is currently being recruited, especially in the area of delivery and logistics. In the past, Swiss Post had complained about problems in finding staff.

Swiss Post aims to abolish lunch breaks again. It is only a short-term solution to relieve the employees. With a view to autumn, the regular opening hours should return. Leitgeb emphasized that there were no frequent customer complaints. From the Swiss Post side, however, it is clear that lunchtime is important for doing errands, especially for working people.
