Singer/Tomaselli: Constitutional provisions on rent caps are intended to protect tenants

Opposition is invited to contribute expertise to negotiations

Vienna (OTS) “We want to make the savings through the new rent cap legally watertight for tenants and protect them from any lawsuits,” commented the negotiators of the rent cap Johann Singer (ÖVP) and Nina Tomaselli (Die Grünen) on the current discussion on the necessity of the rent cap Constitutional provisions in the rent cap law presented yesterday. The experts would have advised this step because landlords could incur losses in the coming years, which they could possibly assert without this protective provision for tenants in the constitution. “In any case, it is not the intention that the legislator will have to clear a two-thirds hurdle in the future when changing the Tenancy Law or the valorization provisions,” said the two politicians.

The parliamentary negotiation process is about to start. “The opposition is invited to contribute itself and the expertise of its experts to the design of the law,” Singer told the SPÖ and FPÖ. One hopes for constructive negotiations, the law is too important for Austrians to change political change.

The governing parties point out that independent experts such as Christoph Badelt and Gabriel Felbermayer have expressly welcomed the rent cap – also the fact that tenants have taken away the uncertainty and prices can be calculated in the long term.

“The intention of the law is clear: we want to alleviate the housing cost burden on Austrian tenants and, after the new broker commission regulations and the housing cost subsidy, deliver another building block to ensure affordable housing,” concludes Tomaselli.
