SK Hynix Expands Shareholder Return Strategy to 60 Trillion Won

SK Hynix has unveiled a 60 trillion won shareholder return package alongside recent cybersecurity breaches at major financial institutions and a notable rebound in national birth rates across South Korea.

The announcements capture a fast-moving economic landscape as the country balances corporate profits with regulatory crackdowns on data security and shifting demographic trends.

SK Hynix Expands Shareholder Returns

Riding a wave of robust financial performance, South Korean chip giant SK Hynix announced a 60 trillion won expansion to its shareholder return strategy on the 28th. According to the company’s public disclosures, projected shareholder returns for the 2026 fiscal year are expected to reach approximately 100 trillion won. This total encompasses over 30 trillion won in cash dividends and more than 60 trillion won dedicated to treasury stock acquisition and cancellation.

The newly announced figures build upon a previously disclosed 40 trillion won buyback and cancellation program revealed in August. Having completed a round of share acquisitions on the 21st, the company plans to cancel those shares shortly. For the July–September quarter, SK Hynix recorded 14 trillion won in cash dividends and 20 trillion won in share buybacks. Of that 20 trillion won, 10 trillion won is earmarked for shareholder cancellation, while the remaining 10 trillion won will fund employee bonuses and compensation packages, exempting it from shareholder return calculations. Quarterly dividends for the period were set at 20,000 won per share.

Financial Firms Hit by Cyberattacks as Personal Data Leaks

South Korea’s financial sector faces heightened scrutiny following a wave of cyberattacks. The Financial Supervisory Service confirmed that cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb, financial heavyweight Mirae Asset Global Investments, and Daishin Securities have all experienced security breaches.

Daishin Securities distributed a press release on the morning of the 28th confirming that the personal information of 38,490 customers had been compromised. Bithumb reported a day prior that unauthorized access had targeted its internal mobile groupware system, prompting an ongoing investigation to determine the exact scope of the data leak. Meanwhile, Mirae Asset Global Investments activated emergency protocols following unauthorized access to a web system, though the company maintained that the breach did not affect retail customer services and resulted in no data leaks. In response, the Financial Supervisory Service dispatched an on-site inspection team to Daishin Securities to verify the situation.

Birth Rates and Foreign Resident Populations Reach New Milestones

On the demographic front, national statistics point to shifting trends in both family formation and immigration. South Korea recorded 23,703 births in August, marking a 13.0% increase compared to the same month last year. According to data released by the National Statistical Office, this figure represents the highest August total since 2019, with the growth rate hitting its highest point for the month since 2007. Cumulative births from January through August reached 193,783—a 14.5% jump from the previous year and the highest aggregate for that period since 2019. Analysts attribute the turnaround to increases in marriages and a growing population of people in their 30s, coupled with evolving social attitudes toward parenting.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety reported that the foreign resident population in South Korea reached 2,662,967 in 2025, a 3.1% increase from the prior year and a new all-time high. Foreign residents now account for 5.1% of South Korea’s total population of 51,817,499. The demographic breakdown shows non-citizens residing in the country for more than 90 days rising to 2,109,057, naturalized citizens increasing to 256,491, and children born in Korea to foreign residents growing to 297,419. Among all categories, international students experienced the steepest surge, climbing 17.6% to 279,720 individuals, while foreign workers and marriage immigrants also saw modest gains.
