Diesel prices at Slovak gas stations hit a historic high, averaging 1.979 euros per liter according to data published by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic for the week ending November 1, Pravda reported. The milestone breaks previous tracking records established in 2009, with prices climbing 0.9 cents over the week and registering a staggering 35 percent increase compared to the same period last year. At several service stations across the country, pump prices for diesel have already pushed past the psychological two-euro threshold.
Gasoline Prices Drop Below the Euro Mark
While diesel drivers bear the brunt of continuous cost increases, motorists filling up with Natural 95 gasoline are experiencing a reprieve. Gasoline prices dropped by 3.5 cents to 1.785 euros per liter, marking the first time since early September that the fuel dipped below the 1.80-euro mark. Over a two-week stretch, gasoline prices fell by a combined 10 cents, though they remain 18 percent higher year-on-year. Data from the European Commission places Slovak gasoline 7.5 percent below the European Union average, with diesel sitting 8.1 percent under the bloc’s average.
Despite these broader European comparisons, fuel costs place Slovakia at the top of the price ladder within the Visegrad Four (V4) group. Speaking on Joj24, Tomáš Lednár pointed out that these domestic price disparities stem from a combination of tax burdens, logistics, market size, and state interventions rather than retail margins alone. Treba si uvedomiť, že v rámci V4 patríme medzi tých najdrahších,
Lednár explained on Joj24, noting that fuel costs are heavily influenced by national taxes, VAT, and state policies. Hlavne ak sa pozrieme na Poľsko, pretože cenu netvoria len marže, na ktoré sme siahli my v rámci Slovenska, ale sú to dane, DPH, logistika, štátna intervencia a takisto veľkosť trhu,
he added.

Analyst Expects Gradual Domestic Fuel Price Drops
Ondrej Greguš, an analyst with XTB, noted that falling world oil prices and wholesale European fuel costs are creating room for gradual price drops domestically. V najbližších týždňoch očakávame postupné zlacňovanie pohonných hmôt na Slovensku, pravdepodobne výraznejšie pri benzíne,
Greguš stated to Denník N, adding that diesel decreases may occur more slowly depending on wholesale market developments and fuel availability.
Further developments in diesel prices will depend largely on the geopolitical situation in the Middle East and the restoration of transport routes supplying fuel to the European market, according to Lednár.
