Smartphones that recharge in less than 8 minutes, Oppo’s crazy bet

The Chinese manufacturer relies on the charging speed of its smartphones to stand out.

The Chinese brand Oppo this week unveiled a new 240-watt charger, capable of fully charging a smartphone’s battery in less than 8 minutes, and 50% in 3.5 minutes, top time.

These ultra-fast chargers are not yet commercially available. The company contented itself with a demonstration on its Twitter account, with a video as proof.

Oppo already offers ultra-fast chargers with its latest smartphones. The recently unveiled Find X5 Pro comes with an 80-watt charger. It fully recharges in 30 minutes flat. Other manufacturers also offer fast chargers. Most of the time, the full charge only occurs between 40 and 60 minutes.

Oppo explains that it has succeeded in improving this technology by creating a battery monitoring tool, which makes it possible to manage its temperature throughout the charge and thus adapt the flow of energy. Security also makes it possible to block the flow in the event of an incident. According to Oppo, this technology not only accelerates the charging speed but also keeps the battery healthy during much longer cycles. The brand explains that after 1600 recharge cycles, the battery retains 80% capacity. When we know that the battery is the main element likely to cause a breakdown on a smartphone, this technology has the potential to considerably extend the life expectancy of devices.
