The dispute between Sofia Goggia and Federica Brignone goes into the next round. The second of the Olympic downhill talks about her experience at the Olympics.
The Zoff between Sofia Goggia and Federica Brignone is richer by another chapter. Privately, the two exceptional Italian skiers can’t stand each other. During the Olympics, Ninna Quario – Brignone’s mom – got involved in the argument. She labeled Goggia as self-centered and downplayed the injury Bergamaskin picked up ahead of the Olympics.
Now it’s Goggia’s turn again. She speaks plain text to RTL. “It is the first time that I speak openly and clearly about it. I don’t want to fuel this conflict any further. Goggia wants to win the discipline ranking
According to his own statement, Goggia “worked 15 hours” for the dream of the Olympics. The therapies started at 6.15 a.m. and she only went home at 9 p.m. «The first day on the snow in China was traumatic for me. It was really difficult». But the hardships were finally rewarded with success.
In the Olympic downhill, Goggia sensationally took silver behind Corinne Suter. Although 23 days earlier in Cortina d’Ampezzo she suffered a partial cruciate ligament rupture in her left knee after a nasty fall, a minor fibula fracture and a tendon injury. Despite the silver medal she won, she describes the Olympic Games with all the restrictions of the pandemic as “a bit strange”.
In an interview with RTL, Goggia also talks about the rest of the season. «After my arrival from Beijing, I allowed myself some rest. But now I’m continuing my rehabilitation process.” Because her leg is still causing her pain. “If I had to start a season under these conditions, I would feel bad. I’m trying to persevere and win the Downhill World Cup.
In the downhill ranking, the Italian leads with 400 points ahead of Suter from Schwyz (331) and Ramona Siebenhofer from Austria (278). There are still three descents on the program. Two races are scheduled in Crans-Montana and one at the World Cup finals in Courchevel and Méribel. (cef)
