Sony needs to cut PS VR2 price to avoid disaster, says analyst

According to a research agency, sales of Sony’s PlayStation VR2 headset may have started with lower-than-expected results.

Bloomberg revealed that according to IDC data, Sony will have sold just 270,000 units by the end of March.

IDC Vice President Francisco Geronimo said in an article that he suspects a price cut for the PlayStation VR2 will be necessary to avoid “complete disaster” with the new product.

According to him, consumers around the world are facing problems with rising inflation and mass layoffs, making a virtual reality headset not a priority for many users.

Bloomberg said Sony aimed to sell 2 million PlayStation VR2 units in the first quarter of 2023, but had to cut that forecast in half. Now, the Japanese company would expect that between April of this year and March 2024, the headset would have sold 1.5 million units.

Sony denied Bloomberg’s information, but did not provide further details. So far, the Japanese company has not revealed how many PlayStation VR2 units have been sold since launch.

Previously, Sony’s chief financial officer, Hiroki Totoki, said that the Japanese company’s new headset has a good chance of surpassing the sales of its successor, which surpassed five million units sold at the end of 2019.

The PlayStation VR2 was launched in Brazil on February 22nd after 10 days on pre-order with a suggested price of R$ 4.500.
