Dubai United Arab Emirates: Combining rarity, beauty and strength, colored diamonds continue to make history this year, topping Sotheby’s jewelry auctions. Today, the house unveiled another jewel: the golden canary. Weighing in at 303.10 carats, the “Fancy Deep Brown-Yellow Diamond” is one of the largest polished diamonds in the world and the largest pure and internally flawless diamond graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). The brilliant diamond is also distinguished by its unparalleled history and provenance, having previously weighed in excess of 407 carats as the “Incomparable Cut Diamond”. The Golden Canary is now more brilliant in color, brighter and more elegant in profile, and deserves to be ranked as one of the exceptional cut diamonds. The “Golden Canary” is expected to be the highlight of the Sotheby’s Fine Jewelery Auction in New York on December 7, with an estimated price tag of approximately $15 million. It will be offered without a reserve amount, which means that the winning bid is the highest bid, regardless of its value or the intrinsic value of the diamond itself.

Due to the global interest in this rare and unique piece, the “Golden Canary” will be shown on a world tour. It was unveiled today at Sotheby’s in Dubai, and will then travel to Taipei, Hong Kong and Geneva.

Additional exhibits in the gallery include stunning contemporary photographs by Moroccan artist Lalla Saidi, best known for her portrayal of Arab women.

The Legendary Story of the “Golden Canary” Diamond

The story of the “Golden Canary” diamond began in the early 1980s in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is said that this stone was originally found among a pile of rubble by a young girl playing in her uncle’s backyard. Miners from the nearby Miba Diamond Mine had at the time considered the find too large to be a diamond so they disposed of it. Little did the miners know, because this pile of rubble was turned into a rough 890-carat diamond, one of the largest the world has ever seen.

The diamond was first introduced to the public in 1984 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History, where it is displayed alongside some of the world’s most legendary diamonds. As the largest uncut rough diamond at the time, the 890-carat rough diamond made quite a splash in global news, sparking the world’s curiosity. Over the next five years, the rough cut diamond into 15 perfect stones, becoming the largest diamond resulting in smaller ones. The yellow to deep brown and luxurious piece weighing 407.49 carats became officially known as the ‘Incomparable Diamond’. It has since been shown in many galleries and museums around the world.

The decision was eventually made to re-polish this diamond to maximize its depth of color, add luster and improve its appearance, resulting in the diamond known today as the “Golden Canary”. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is ranked in the

His latest study is unambiguous, with the institute stating: “The re-polishing of this remarkable diamond to look like new and become a shiny 303.10 carat pear-shaped diamond. This polishing process confirms the capabilities of the advanced technologies, computer modeling and visual evaluation available today.”

About the yellow diamond

Fine yellow diamonds make up only 0.006% of all diamonds mined in the world. Only a small percentage of these diamonds are pure and internally flawless. With its almost incomprehensible combination of size and color saturation, the “Golden Canary” diamond is an exceptional piece in every sense of the word.
