South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol’s office said Monday that the president will suspend the informal meetings with the media, which he has been holding almost daily since taking office in May, citing the high number of COVID-19 infections.

Yoon’s office added in a statement that further coverage of the president’s activities will also be limited, with spokespersons turning mainly to written comments along with photos and videos of his activities rather than conducting face-to-face interviews with the media.

“In light of the risks of the spread of infectious diseases, we ask for your understanding,” he added.

Health authorities have warned that the country is facing a new wave of infections, with some experts expecting hundreds of thousands of new infections to be recorded in the coming weeks.

South Korea recorded 12,693 new cases of COVID-19 today, Monday, bringing the total number of infections to 18524,583 in addition to 18 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 24,661 since the start of the pandemic.
