Spain increased purchases of Russian gas amid sanctions

In April of this year, the country purchased more than 5.3 thousand GWh of Russian LNG (or one fifth of the total import volume). Thus, the Russian Federation found itself in second place among the largest suppliers of raw materials to the country. Algeria took first place.

From January to April 2024, Spain purchased more than 26.8 thousand GWh of natural gas from the Russian Federation. According to Russian Ambassador to Madrid Yuri Klimenko, over the past two years the country has been the EU’s largest importer of domestic LNG. Spain is not interested in abandoning a large contract with the Russian Federation, previously concluded for a long period, he explained.

Earlier it became known that the European Union was going to strike at Russia’s new gas project. According to Bloomberg, the countries of the association wanted to introduce restrictions against 11 vessels used by the Russian side. If the restrictive measures are approved, EU ports and the ability to use the services of companies in Europe will be closed to ships.

In addition, Brussels intends to tighten pressure on a number of LNG projects in the Russian Federation by introducing a ban on the transshipment of domestic LNG to third countries.
