Stow Acres Country Club, a 27-hole public facility located 30 miles west of Boston, is celebrating its 100th anniversary by offering weekday green fees on its 18-hole South Course for just 50 cents.
Fantasy & Market Impact
- The promotional pricing drastically cuts operational revenue for the affected windows, generating roughly $34 per afternoon block based on maximum group capacity.
- Surge demand has completely jammed the facility’s tee sheets, driving foot traffic and first-time visitors to the historic property.
- Course management is intentionally absorbing a financial loss on the green fees to capture marketing value and introduce new players to the layout.
A Century of History at Mapledale
Opening in 1926 as a nine-hole layout called Mapledale Country Club, the property stands as one of the country’s first Black-owned and -operated courses. The club hosted the National Black Men’s Championship in its debut year, as well as in 1927 and 1928. Original owner Robert Hawkins operated the facility for three years before forfeiting it during the Great Depression. Over the decades, the property expanded to 36 holes and became Stow Acres before recently shutting down nine holes on the North Course during a major renovation.
General manager David Carlson conceived the throwback pricing structure to honor the property’s rich past. The 50-cent fee is drawn directly from an old road sign recovered on the grounds years ago, which listed weekday rates at fifty cents and weekend rates at seventy-five cents. Carlson noted that the club formed the Rediscover Mapledale committee to raise money for historical signage now displayed around the property, emphasizing that the promotion prioritizes historical tribute.
Reviving the 1920s Routing
Beyond slashing prices, the club recreated Mapledale’s original nine-hole routing for the first time in nearly 80 years. Studying old aerial imagery of the South Course, Carlson and his team rewired the front nine by eliminating par-5s, introducing three temporary greens, and shortening the layout down to roughly 2,100 yards. Paul Melo, who works in the pro shop and served as starter during the event, noted that the temporary layout features unique shifts, such as a 1st hole playing 165 yards to a temporary green rather than its usual 365 yards from the tips.

| Course Metric | Modern Configuration | Anniversary Routing |
|---|---|---|
| Total Yardage (Front 9) | ~3,100 yards | ~2,100 yards |
| Weekday Green Fee | typically $50 | 50 cents |
The promotion runs from October 27 through October 29, operating daily from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. That afternoon window accommodates roughly 17 groups of four golfers, yielding about 68 players per day and generating minimal direct revenue against the high demand. Melo confirmed the tee sheets sold out across the entire schedule.
