The weekend of August 5-7, 2022 was the biggest fighting game event of the year. Between two tournaments and the coronation of Wawa on Dragon Ball FighterZ, the publishers took the opportunity to chain the announcements. Fatal Fury, Street Fighter 6, Tekken or even Guilty Gear Strive… here are the announcements that should not be missed during EVO 2022.

Dragon Ball FighterZ : Rollback et versions Next Gen
Dragon Ball FighterZ is undoubtedly one of the flagship games of EVO and has been since its sensational release in January 2018 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, then a few months later on Nintendo Switch. Although the Arc System Works title was available on 9th Gen consoles – thanks to backwards compatibility – it lacked true PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. It is now done. In effect, Bandai Namco has just announced versions dedicated to these new machines. No release date has yet been announced. Note that they will be offered free of charge to owners of the games on PS4 and Xbox One. Good news never comes alone, producer Tomoko Hiroki confirmed the arrival of netcode rollback in order to play online in better conditions. Enabled by default on console, it will be optional on PC. The netcode rollback will be coming to Dragon Ball FighterZ on an as yet unknown date.

Fatal Fury: An expected return
Japanese publisher SNK has clearly been busy at EVO 2022 with several successive announcements made during the American event. It’s now official, the legendary fighting game saga Fatal Fury (or Garou in Japan) is well and truly back. However, the title has only just received the green light, which means that the project is only in its infancy and we will have to wait to learn more. Fans will have to settle for a first visual for the moment (see below). This illustration by Tonko suggests that this new game is a direct sequel to Garou: Mark of the Wolves. You can see the fighter Rock Howard, the adopted son of Terry Bogard, as well as Billy Kane and Kain R. Heinlein, Rock’s uncle and main antagonist of the game released in 1999 in Japan.
Street Fighter 6: Two new fighters in the roster
Street Fighter 6, although not part of the official competition, has clearly left its mark this weekend dedicated to fighting games. Indeed, Capcom continues its communication campaign around the sixth episode of its famous franchise by letting up two new fighters in the SF6 ring, namely Kimberly and Juri. They therefore join Ryu, Chun-Li, Luke, Jamie and Guile in the list of playable characters. While Kimberly mixes her ninja skills and her love of popular culture to create a style all her own, Juri makes a mischievous return, not without learning new moves to mystify her opponents. Finally, Capcom pro Tour veterans Tasty Steve and James Chen join the ranks of Street Fighter 6 real-time commentators alongside Vicious and Aru.
Tekken: A new project unveiled
Just after the grand finale of Tekken 7 At EVO 2022, Bandai Namco released a trailer showcasing the next major update for its fighting game. However, it is the modernized face of Kazuya accompanied by an enigmatic “Get ready” which served as a conclusion to the sequence. The Japanese publisher would therefore be working on a new Tekken game. We can assume this teaser points to Tekken 8, though nothing has been confirmed by franchise director Katsuhiro Harada yet. The move from the 1994 PlayStation version of Kazuya to the modern one could also indicate that Bandai Namco is working on a reboot or remake of the saga.
Guilty Gear Strive: Bridget enters the arena
Arc System Works, great craftsman of fighting games since its creation in 1988, gave some news of Guilty Gear Strive, the latest installment in the saga. In addition to having unveiled the roadmap for its season 2 and the delayed arrival of crossplay, Japanese studios have revealed the first character for the second season. It is about Bridget, a boy brought up as a girl in order to escape the beliefs of his native village. The latter fights with a yo-yo and can count on Roger, a mechanical teddy bear possessed by a ghost. This new character is already available, provided you have purchased the Season Pass 2 or the DLC.
