Strike on the airfield near Rostov. Ukraine said planes were destroyed

According to sources, Su-27 fighters and Su-34 front-line bombers, which have recently been actively operating along the front line, were based at the airfield.

The first data about a drone strike on Morozovsk appeared on Friday night.

At about two o’clock in the morning Moscow time, the governor of the Rostov region Vasily Golubev published a brief message: “In the Morozovsky region, air defense units are repelling a massive UAV attack.”

Before this, Russian media, including the propaganda “Readovka,” wrote that the target of the attack was the airfield in Morozovsk.

Golubev later said that the drones hit the electrical substation and caused “minor damage” to it; no one was injured at that moment.

In another telegram post, the governor added that around noon on Friday “in the Morozovsky district, not far from the airfield,” an explosive device detonated on one of the fallen drones, as a result of which, according to preliminary data, eight people were injured. “They carried out investigative actions at the site of the drone crash,” writes Golubev.

At night, it was also reported that Ukrainian drones struck the city of Engels in the Saratov region, where Russian heavy bombers are based. “A UAV was eliminated in Engels early this morning. There were no casualties or damage to infrastructure from falling debris,” Roman Busargin, governor of the Saratov region, wrote in a telegram.

From this formulation it was impossible to draw an unambiguous conclusion whether one drone was destroyed or more than one. The local public wrote about multiple explosions, but if an air target is shot down by missiles, then at least two missiles are needed to intercept it.

Engels is best known for its base of Tu-95 and Tu-22 heavy bombers, which are used to fire cruise missiles at the Ukrainian rear from long ranges, usually from the Caspian region.

This airfield has been subject to Ukrainian attacks several times in the past.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation published its data on the Russian regions on how many drones were shot down and where during the night, from which it follows that one drone was shot down in the Saratov region, 44 in the Rostov region. Six drones were also shot down over the Krasnodar Territory and one over Kursk and Belgorod regions, the military department reported.
