A study has found that elderly osteoporosis-sarcoma-induced obesity can cause lung function abnormalities.

Recently, a new concept called osteoporosis-sarcomenic obesity, a combination of osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity, has been published, suggesting that the elderly should pay more attention to health management.

Aging in the elderly causes detrimental changes in body composition, such as a decrease in bone and muscle mass and an increase in body fat mass. This complex form of osteopenia, sarcopenia, and obesity is a new concept called osteoporosis-sarcopenic obesity (OSO). is presented as

Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine Kangbuk Samsung Hospital (President Shin Hyeon-cheol) Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Professor Cheol-Hyun Park and Han-Sol Lim majored in the research team analyzed 28,623 adults aged 50 or older who underwent health checkups at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital General Health Checkup Center between 2012 and 2018.

According to changes in body composition, the research team divided the subjects into △normal bodies (without osteopenia, sarcopenia, or obesity) △having 1 unhealthy condition △having 2 unhealthy conditions and △having 3 unhealthy conditions.

Compared to the normal body group, the risk of obstructive pulmonary dysfunction increased by 36% in the group with 1 adverse condition, increased by 47% in the group with 2 adverse conditions, and increased by 64% in the group with 3 adverse conditions. did.

In particular, it was confirmed that forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) decreased and the incidence of obstructive pulmonary dysfunction increased as more harmful body composition components were present.

Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Professor Park Cheol-hyun said, “By managing weight, preventing osteoporosis, and maintaining muscle mass in the elderly, we will be able to prevent deterioration of lung function, especially the risk of obstructive pulmonary function abnormality.”

Kangbuk Samsung Hospital Department of Rehabilitation Medicine specialist Lim Han-sol added, “It is important to maintain muscle mass through energy and protein supply through food or nutritional supplement intake and exercise aimed at improving muscle mass, strength, and physical ability.”

Meanwhile, the results of this study were published in the June 2023 issue of Nutrients, an international academic journal.
