In other federal states, including Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, the summer holidays will begin in the coming days. The ADAC expects traffic jams on many motorways for the weekend.

On the holiday routes, you will be able to “move only at walking pace” in sections, the automobile club said. Most traffic jams are therefore expected for Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. The reason is the ongoing holiday traffic: In Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein, the summer holidays begin this week. This means that 11 of the 16 federal states have no school. Another wave of travelers is also expected from Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. In the south and in the center of the Netherlands, students also have free time.

Motorways to the North Sea and Baltic Sea affected

Traffic obstructions are expected, for example, on the trunk roads to the North and Baltic Seas. The ADAC advises to switch to quieter routes or, if possible, to choose another day of travel. Suitable days of the week are therefore Tuesday and Thursday. Waiting times on the freeways can be particularly uncomfortable in some places due to the high temperatures. The heat could build up on the roadways. Travelers should prepare themselves and, for example, have enough water on board, experts advise.

Congestion is expected on these routes in the north:

Traffic obstructions in Hamburg

Even in Hamburg itself, road users must expect disabilities. Because of the Water World Triathlon, different roads will be closed at different times. The competition starts this Thursday and ends on July 16th.

Additional truck driving ban should relieve

The ADAC had previously predicted that in terms of traffic jams the previous year’s level could even be exceeded. “Even at Easter and Pentecost there was a lot more going on on the roads than in 2022 or before,” said an ADAC traffic expert. Accordingly, there were 38,351 traffic jams on the weekends of the 2022 summer holidays counted in Germany. And this year, too, travelers should have expected longer travel times, especially on the access roads to the mountains, to the lakes and to the coasts. The ADAC is hoping for at least some relief from the additional truck holiday driving ban, which applies every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. until the end of August.

Going on vacation by plane? New system at Hanover Airport

But even those who don’t travel by car, but fly on vacation by plane, could be confronted with problems again and arrive stressed at their vacation destination. On Thursday, climate activists of the “last generation” paralyzed the airport in Hamburg for several hours. There have been long waiting times in recent years, even without protests from climate activists. Hanover Airport has therefore introduced a new system that should lead to less waiting time for travelers.

By 2050 at the latest, it should be possible to fly in a climate-neutral manner. That’s what the aviation industry promises. But scientists don’t see a chance of doing that. (03/17/2023)
