Supporting Morocco’s Earthquake Recovery: Romans International Sends Young Volunteers for Relief Efforts

Two months after the earthquake in Morocco, the Romans International association sends eight young people to help there. She has been working for years with a Moroccan association, the Amuddu association. It has been trading for a long time with the town of Taroudant and the surrounding province, in the southwest of the country. Young people from this region come to Drôme and Ardèche and vice versa. But after the devastating earthquake of September 8, 2023, the eight young people who are leaving there this Monday for 15 days will have slightly different missions.

“It’s a mission that was planned before the earthquake,” explains Patrick Girault, the director of l’association Romans International, “and precisely, at the time of the earthquake, we wondered if we were going to be able to continue to send young volunteers there, for security reasons. We spoke with our long-time partner, the Amuddu association. And we decided to continue. The young people will have the initial mission, to set up a shared garden in a high school. And moreover, they will help clear streets and premises in villages affected by the earthquake around the town of Taroudant.”

Young volunteers aged 18 to 23 have no particular training, “but we are not on a humanitarian mission” underlines Patrick Girault, “we are no longer in the post-earthquake emergency. We are supporting the local population who are organizing to rebuild, in particular to build shelters for the winter. The young people will be supervised by the Amuddu association and other local partners who know the needs very well.”

Charlotte Renesson-Philipon is the youngest to leave. Just 18 years old. From Valentin, who has just completed her high school diploma, she is waiting to be able to take a degree in political science and has therefore decided to volunteer this year: “I’m going there without any preconceptions” she says, “It’s interesting because we’re going to meet people, which allows us to move forward. And we will be able to understand how they experienced the earthquake and help these residents.

The Romans International association has already sent two young volunteers there for a few weeks, for a longer mission: eight months of international civic service. The money drive she launched just after the earthquake to help the inhabitants of the province of Taroudant is still active.
