Surviving a Sand Viper Bite: Thibaut’s Story and Tips for Safety

During a walk in Croatia, Thibaut, 6, was bitten by a sand viper, one of the most venomous snakes in Europe. Fortunately, he was transported to the hospital in time.

The Spriet family is a family like any other, with one child, little Thibaut, 6 years old. This little one was recently confronted by the sand viper, one of the most venomous snakes in Europe! Its bite can cause death.

Last week, tourists from Deinze near Ghent went hiking in this Croatian nature park and then cooled off in this river. “Suddenly, we heard our son scream! I didn’t see it, but my wife was able to see the snake, mouth wide open, fangs clearly visible!“, details the dad of the victim.

Thibaut picked up a branch in the water, but there was a viper on it and he got bitten in the hand. His mother takes a photo by reflex then tries to call an ambulance, but there is no network… We will have to walk to the aid station spotted earlier: it is 45 minutes from the river .

Seeing the photo, the person told us not to panic, but I understood that it was serious“, thus testifies the father.

Thibaut is taken to the hospital, an hour away, where he finally receives an antidote, in extremis! “I feel better, I can get up to go play…“, he explains now.
The venom is stopped just before reaching the heart and Thibaut is better. The family hopes to return to Belgium this week.
